Scottish Cis Woman Sent to Male Prison After Being Identified by Staff as Trans
Sparking public outrage that she was subjected to the group torture the UK reserves for transgender people.
A Scottish woman was recently sent to an all-male prison due to her “masculine features”, or rather, looking transgender. This comes a year after the Scottish prison service changed its policy to send all transgender women to male prisons, as what can only be described as a sick and deranged decision that puts the lives of transgender Scotts at risk.
The Scottish woman was sent to HMP Perth, a high-security men’s prison, simply because prison authorities assumed her appearance made her transgender.
The error has prompted widespread backlash from the UK population, making it clear that cisgender people are able to see the risks of housing a woman in a mens prison. A form of torture the Scottish Prison Service reserves for transgender women. While the woman was eventually transferred to a women’s prison, this incident reveals how deeply transphobia has infiltrated UK institutions, and it highlights the dangerous consequences for everyone, including cisgender women, when society fails to confront it.

The immediate danger of placing any woman in a men’s prison cannot be overstated. Cis and Trans Women placed in male prisons, are placed at extremely high risk of violence, sexual assault, and harassment. The fact that she was moved based solely on appearance reflects an underlying transphobia that continues to harm both trans and cis women.
This isn’t just an isolated mistake—it’s part of a wider trend of transphobia that’s damaging the fabric of UK societal cohesion. The Scottish Prison Service has a policy of housing transgender women with male inmates, cultivating a sick culture that’s deeply suspicious of anyone who deviates from stereotypical gender norms.
And so long as UK institutions are free to make decisions about people based on their assumptions about the gender of others, anyone can find themselves victimized by these biases.
In a statement, a Scottish Prison Service spokesman said, "The rights, safety, and wellbeing of all individuals, including those newly admitted to our care, is a key priority."
If that were true, this discriminatory policy wouldn’t be in place.
This is terrible but not surprising - as someone living in the UK I’m ashamed to say this.
I’ve yet to see this on our news here so thank you for drawing attention to it.
The fact it’s only outrageous when they target transgender people is key
Also tbh I’d go a step further and say the prison wouldn’t exist if they actually cared about safety/wellbeing of people but whatever,
