Biddy O’Loughlin, daughter of comedian Fiona O’Loughlin, is seeking media attention this week after verbally abusing a transgender woman at a women’s-only Alcoholics Anonymous meeting—and then doubling down on social media. The outburst has sparked outrage and led to the cancellation of her upcoming comedy gig at Adelaide’s Crown & Anchor Hotel.
In an Instagram video, O'Loughlin boasted about her actions, describing how she “kicked up a fuss” after spotting a trans woman in the meeting. Referring to the individual in absolutely horrendous and vile terms, O'Loughlin dismissed her as "a guy [sic] who's cut his [sic] dick off and grown his [sic] hair," adding that the trans woman had previously followed her to bathrooms at AA meetings to intimidate her.
The alleged intimidation by the trans woman seems conveniently tied to O'Loughlin’s own stated disbelief in gender identity, a view she continues to tout under the guise of defending women's rights. It’s very common for anti-trans activists to assign violence to benign actions that trans women take, such as going to the toilet.
What O’Loughlin failed to acknowledge was the blatant cruelty of her actions in a space meant for healing and support. In her Instagram rant, O'Loughlin painted herself as the victim after she was removed from the meeting for violence. In a bitterly ironic twist, she complained about her own mental struggles and challenges, seemingly completely oblivious to the damage her abusive outburst would have caused to the others in attendance, all equally in need of that same support.
After complaints from a Crown & Anchor staff member, O'Loughlin was dropped from the Cranker Comedy lineup, where she was scheduled to perform on October 15. This isn’t the first time she’s courted controversy for her transphobic views. Her social media is littered with jabs at transgender women, and she proudly sports a red cap with the slogan "Make Women Female Again," a not-so-subtle nod to Donald Trump’s divisive brand of politics.
O’Loughlin’s brand of comedy—heavy on anti-trans rhetoric—has now cost her a spot in one of Adelaide's most beloved comedy venues. But rather than back down, she’s leaning into the role of the "cancelled" comic. “They call me the JK Rowling of the Adelaide comedy scene,” she bragged on Instagram, seemingly proud of the comparison to the author now synonymous with anti-trans controversy.
She’s still pushing ahead with a solo show at The Duke of York Hotel, in Adelaide on October 12.
I'll be sure to forward this to my Australian gf so she can make a call to The Duke Hotel. Fucking transphobes...
